To successfully combat them in the case of an ant invasion at home, the first step is to learn a bit about the biology of that species and discover the whereabouts of the colony nest.

Effectively, you will want to know where they all come from and go back hiding to! Some of the species have their nests inside, while others might be nesting outdoors and only enter a house looking for food.

HOW TO PREVENT ANTS

As with everything else in life, there is one easy and hassle-free tactic to resolve a complicated situation such as ant removal or ant control: ants prevention. But before heading over to Google in search of “how to get rid of ants” or “how to kill ants”, make sure you follow some basic rules to keep ants away:

  • Spill it, clean it. Make sure the surface remains clean and dry after handling food and liquids
  • Empty that sink. It might have been a long day and you’re tired or just not up for it, but for the sake of your kitchen, don’t leave those dishes and used utensils in the sink over night.  At the end of the day, the sink and surrounding area should be wiped clean. A wet environment is prone to bacteria growth and very likely to attract those unwanted multi-legged visitors
  • Seal the deal. And the bins where possible; or at least keep them closed and as clean as possible
  • Keep the carpets clean. Make sure to vacuum regularly and keep the dust away
  • Keep the food to yourself. Keep food stored away from any potential insects in air tight containers. Ants are particularly attracted to foods rich in protein and sugar
  • If there is a crack, there is a way. Crevices, cracks and holes they can all become entry points for ants, so make sure to seal them if possible.
  • Food off the floor! If there is a place that holds no trouble for ants to fetch the food, that would be the floor.

ARE ANTS CONSIDERED PEST?

Usually, ants are considered to be beneficial insects, but when they decide to take over a home, they can become a real nuisance. Even more so, some ant species have been discovered to spread disease from infected to non-infected organisms.

TYPES OF AUSTRALIAN ANTS

With over 16,000 types of ant species and subspecies and 1,300 species known in Australia alone, it can be overwhelming to know exactly which type of ant you are dealing with, but there are a few species more common than others in Australia:

ARGENTINE ANT

Light to dark brown in colour, they bite rather than stinging, do not swarm and are more attracted to sweet foods and other insects.

BLACK HOUSE ANT

With a shiny black body, they are most likely to be found in the kitchen and garbage, therefore they can potentially spread diseases like salmonella.

BULL ANT (ALSO KNOWN AS BULLDOG ANT)

Red or black in appearance; they are very aggressive if their nest is attacked and tend to live outside, rarely entering buildings. Their sting can be very painful to humans.

CARPENTER ANT

From brown to black in colour, they feed on living and dead insects and are responsible for damage done to wood and wooden objects.

COASTAL BROWN ANT

Yellow brown to brown in appearance, they tend to next in dry areas around the house, garden and walls and will attack foods rich in protein, sugar and fat.

FIRE ANT

Coppery-brown in colour, these ants are one of the most common urban and agricultural pest and can inflict a painful sting to humans if aggravated.

GARDEN ANT

Dark-brown in colour, these ants do not have a sting and tend to nest outdoors in soil. The nests can be identified by the finely powdered soil surrounding the exit holes.

GHOST ANT

Translucent abdomen and legs in appearance, they feed on sweet and greasy foods and can be found in the kitchen and bathroom cabinets.

GREEN ANT

Distinctive metallic green head; the ants nest in small colonies in bushy and urban areas and rarely enter houses.

ODOROUS HOUSE ANT

Brown or black in colour, they nest in large ant colonies and mostly feed on sugary household foods. They are attracted to moisture and can be found in bathrooms and even house plant pots.

PAVEMENT ANT

Dark brown or black, they eat almost any human and pet food and can be seen moving around pipes and electrical wires.

PHARAOH’S ANT

Yellow brown with a brown abdomen, can be found in crevices of heated buildings.

SINGAPORE ANT

Light brown with a darker abdomen, nests around cracks and crevices, near plastic and electrical equipment.

WHITE FOOTED HOUSE ANT

Most often black in colour with yellow-white feet, they nest outside in wooden areas, or inside attics, along walls and fences and are attracted to sweet foods.

HOW ABOUT FLYING ANTS?

Most ants are wingless. However, at certain times of the year, swarms of flying ants become a common sight. These winged ants often are called alates, swarmers or reproductives. Both ants and termites swarm to mate, then the males die, having done their duty, and the queens drop their wings to find a nesting site.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FLYING ANTS OR TERMITES

Determining if you confront with a flying ant or a winged termite invasion is important for establishing how you are going to approach it. Winged ants have elbowed antennae, thin waists constricted at the thorax and hind wings smaller than their front wings, while termite wings are uniform in size and the antennae are almost straight.
